The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) update the Integrated System Plan (ISP) every two years. The current Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) ISP review process gives us the opportunity to reform the approach to the plan itself and ensure that from 2030 onwards, it sets the course for a fairer and more efficient energy transition.
That’s why our response to the AEMC’s Review of the Integrated System Plan – Discussion paper reiterates our push for key changes that will enable a genuine whole of system plan and progress the most efficient transition pathway. Our recommendations for the Review include:
- Changing the purpose of ISP planning to serve the long-term interest of consumers, not the power system;
- expanding co-optimisation to all resources in the electricity system, including generation, storage, transmission, distribution, CER and demand side resources, and;
- improved actionability mechanisms for all resources, with a distinct mechanism to progress unregulated/non-network resources.
These recommendations build on our rule change proposal, which was designed to be considered as part of this Review.
What’s next?
The AEMC will complete its ISP review by 1 July 2027. We will continue to engage throughout this process to build on progress made in the ISP 2026 around co-optimisation and actionability, so future ISPs will better serve the long-term interest of consumers.
