We called for changes to the NSW Working with Children Check Scheme to better support First Nations people who want to become carers.
We made a submission to the statutory review of the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012 (NSW), which underpins the NSW Working with Children Check (WWCC) Scheme.
In accordance with the landmark Family is Culture review, we called for changes to the Scheme to better support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who want to become carers.
We also made recommendations to:
- Prevent victim-survivors of domestic and family violence who have been wrongfully identified as a perpetrator from being unnecessarily rejected for a WWCC clearance;
- Provide greater support for applicants who face barriers navigating the scheme;
- Ensure that checks are focused on child-related work; and
- Improve the transparency of the Scheme.
