Submission to the inquiry into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Peoples Recognition Bill 2012

PIAC’s submission to the inquiry into Aboriginal Strait Islander Peoples Recognition Bill 2012 draws on PIAC’s earlier submission to the Expert Panel on Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal Strait Islander Peoples. PIAC supports reform of the Australian Constitution to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, as an important step in securing equality and non-discrimination. We call on the Government to provide more detail about the process and mechanics of the planned Constitutional reform and emphasise the importance of meaningful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities throughout this process of change.
