Networks costs are rising, and because they’re making up a larger portion of our bills, this is also driving ongoing bill increases. We need more effective monitoring and reporting, including better measures of efficiency to ensure networks are minimising costs to consumers.
That’s why we supported reform measures in our response to the Australian Energy Regulator’s (AER) Network Performance Reporting for Regulated Electricity and Gas Networks Consultation Paper, focusing on two key areas:
- More comprehensive and meaningful metrics to assess how effectively network infrastructure is utilised, ensuring new investment only happens when absolutely necessary and;
- More comprehensive and robust emissions reporting, which includes an evaluation of transition plans to ensure networks are contributing efficiently to lower emissions.
What’s next?
We will continue working with the AER and other stakeholders to make sure network performance reporting is fit to meet the challenges of a decarbonising energy system, while promoting and protecting people’s interests, as part of this process and others such as the rule change on Integrated Distribution System Planning.
