A strong skilled workforce in regional areas is critical to support fair outcomes for regional communities through the energy transition, including the completion of Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) projects. But with a shortage of skilled electricity workers in regional NSW, efficient project and service delivery is at risk.

That’s why we supported Essential Energy’s (EE) proposed training academy in Tamworth, with additional hubs throughout their network area in Parkes, Grafton, Orange, Wagga Wagga, and Goulburn, in our response to the EE’s Ringfencing Waiver Application, submitted to the Australian Energy Regulator (AER).

We broadly support the proposal with a number of recommended safeguards to ensure against any cost impact to NSW households.

What’s next?

Essential Energy’s proposal is a constructive and timely way to address regional workforce challenges in the energy sector. We recognise the transition will require more effective cooperation between governments, business and communities and we’ll continue to advocate for practical and innovative measures whichsupport an equitable transition and ensure fairer outcomes for people in regional areas.
