The Justice and Equity Centre provided a submission to the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion, focusing on the areas of discrimination, civil vilification and criminal hate speech law reform.

This included recommendations to:

  • Implement the National Anti-Racism Framework, developed by the Australian Human Rights Commission
  • Introduce a Religious Discrimination Bill that prohibits discrimination on the ground of religious belief in a similar manner to existing laws and without permitting increased discrimination against other groups
  • Support the protections offered by section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth) as well as the expansion of civil vilification laws to cover religious belief, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, sex characteristics and disability, and
  • Where inciting hatred criminal offences exist or are introduced, ensure they cover all relevant groups, and do not include carve-outs for quoting from or referencing religious texts.
