The NSW Net Zero Commission is helping shape NSW’s decarbonisation pathways. It recommends how the NSW government can support each sector of the economy to contribute to meeting the state’s legislated emissions reduction targets. This work is critical to accelerating emissions reduction. For the JEC it is also an important opportunity to ensure emissions reduction improves fairness in energy, housing and transport outcomes in NSW.
That’s why our response to the NSW Net Zero Commission – Decarbonisation pathways for NSW: Call for evidencehighlights how the Commission should advise the NSW Government to best prioritise action maximising near term emissions reduction though interventions which also improve equity, including:
- Measures to ensure the fastest possible closure of each of the remaining 12 individual coal generation units in NSW;
- interventions to further accelerate deployment of renewables into the electricity sector;
- exploring the role that pricing NSW electricity emissions could have in achieving emissions targets;
- ensuring no gas generation specific financial support, while progressing a plan for the equitable transition of gas networks, and;
- a commitment to implementing ratings-based minimum energy efficiency rental standards and more incentives to electrify household hot water.
What’s next?
All submissions from this consultation will be reviewed to see how they can inform the development of the first NSW-specific set of decarbonisation pathways. We’ll continue to push for planning that can accelerate near-term emissions reduction and secure more equitable outcomes for NSW households.
