The NSW energy system is changing rapidly with electrification and the uptake of new distributed energy technology and services. The electrical and gas safety regulatory framework needs to keep pace with this change to ensure it is fit for purpose and supports the efficient outcomes which best serve and protect the NSW community.

That’s why our response to the Independent Review of the New South Wales Electrical and Gas Safety Regulatory Framework, commissioned by the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), focussed on more ambitious reforms which:

  • Safely facilitate gas network retreat to support low-cost electrification;
  • Ensure effective regulation where risks are managed by those best placed, to ensure efficient, equitable deployment of new energy technologies while avoiding consumer harm, and;
  • Enables practical and equitable access to smart metering data for safety regulation.

What’s next?

A draft report will be published in June 2026, with a final presented to the Minister in October 2026. Our ongoing work on this process supports our wider efforts to enable household electrification. We will stay engaged to ensure safety frameworks will protect NSW households while ensuring everyone can benefit from the energy transition.
