Home Energy Ratings are a critical tool for making Australian homes more energy efficient. But without mandates for homeowners and landlords to disclose home energy ratings, they won’t be taken up at scale and deliver the intended impact on the quality of homes.

That’s why our submission to NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water’s (DCCEEW) Request for Information on Solutions to Stimulate Demand for Home Energy Ratingsrecommends that the Government:

  • Sets out a clear and ambitious timeline for phasing in mandatory disclosure, ideally no longer than 2 years;
  • works with communities, industry, and trade unions to ensure programmes to attract energy assessment workforce are in line with community needs, and;
  • considers partnerships with the health or community sectors to drive demand and enable more equitable outcomes from energy efficiency upgrades.

What’s next?

We’ll continue to work with the Government as it investigates opportunities to expand access to home energy ratings. This work also aligns with our advice to Government on Minimum Energy Efficiency Rental Standards (MEERS).
