The Climate Change Authority’s (CCA) work in providing expert, evidence-based advice to the Commonwealth Government is key to reducing emissions and enabling the rapid and fair transition we need.
That’s why our response to the Climate Change Authority 2026 Annual Progress Advice Consultation Paper highlights the importance of considering emissions budgets and prioritising near-term emissions reduction, including:
- Interventions that ensure the fastest deployment of renewables in the electricity sector;
- recommending against any gas generation specific financial support from the Commonwealth Government,
- supporting a household gas ban and assistance to states for the equitable transition of gas networks, and;
- incorporating the electricity sector into the Safeguard Mechanism or otherwise pricing emissions of fossil fuel generation.
What’s next?
The CCA will use input from submissions to inform its 2026 Annual Progress advice, which informs the Minister’s annual Climate Change Statement. We’ll continue to engage in these processes as part of our wider work for a fairer transition.
