As the energy system transition progresses, processes to ensure ongoing system strength must evolve to ensure the most efficient and effective solutions are employed.

That’s why our response to the Australian Energy Market Operator’s (AEMO) Draft 2026 General Power System Risk Review report consultation paper recommends:

  • An updated approach to system strength that assesses the key components for a more nuanced understanding and consideration of the most efficient solutions;
  • no longer defaulting to deployment of synchronised condensers to address issues of system strength;
  • researching and analysing viable alternatives to synchronous condensers including clutches, batteries, and pumped hydro.

What’s next?

The final GPSRR report will be published by the end of July. We’ll continue to engage in processes to encourage better solutions for managing risks to system strength, that prioritise consumer interests.
