Equitable access to smart metering is crucial to sharing the benefits of cheaper renewable energy and a more efficient energy system. With the accelerated rollout of smart metering, ensuring all meters are installed and effectively maintained is a basic service expectation that also serves as a foundation of trust in the energy system.
That’s why our response to the AEMC’s Supporting compliance with meter maintenance obligations draft determination focuses on the proposal to give Metering Coordinators (MCs) greater flexibility to repair, test and inspect meters. We strongly recommended enhanced provisions with:
- clear expectations around meter rectification timeframes;
- stronger transparency measures, so oversight of the exemption framework is not limited to AEMO and MCs alone, and;
- safeguards that protect consumers for extended outages and reduced service quality.
What’s next?
The AEMC will deliver its final determination in June 2026. We will continue to work on metering and data reforms to ensure they support equity of access to fit-for-purpose metering as the smart meter rollout continues across NSW.
