Electricity and gas retail markets in NSW – and the energy system more broadly – is in a period of significant, ongoing change. These changes affect NSW households’ experiences as they try to access the affordable, reliable and sustainable energy services they need. It’s crucial for decision makers to have an accurate and up-to-date view of how the market is working for all NSW households, to inform reforms that make energy services fairer for all.
That’s why, as well as responding to a range of questions and issues raised by IPART, our submission to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal’s (IPART) Monitoring the Retail Electricity and Gas Markets in NSW 25-26 consultation paper highlights three broad issues that should inform the focus of IPARTs’ 25-26 market review, including:
- Failures to consistently ensure meaningful choice and consent in retail energy markets, and how this undermines good outcomes for NSW households;
- how energy continues to be unaffordable for many NSW households and how this manifests, drawing on research and case studies from community partners, and;
- how the benefits and costs of the household energy transition continue to be experienced and borne inequitably.
What’s next?
IPART will submit its Energy Market Monitoring Reports to the NSW Minister for Energy in November 2026. We’ll draw on their findings and recommendations and continue to push for the reforms that ensure fairer and better outcomes for all NSW households.
