2SER: Rule Changes for a Fairer Gas System

Across Australia, people are disconnecting from gas and switching to electric appliances, to benefit from cleaner energy and cheaper bills.

In Victoria and the ACT, governments no longer allow gas connections to new houses and apartment buildings.

Climate and consumer advocates say phasing out gas makes sense and is necessary for Australia to meet its emissions targets and reduce household energy bills.

But they’re concerned that during the transition, people unable to get off gas will be left paying more as network costs have to be paid by a shrinking customer base.

Policy Officer Kira van Os joined 2SER Breakfast to explain this issue, and how we can fix it.
