Police in NSW would have the power to conduct knife wanding searches “anytime, anywhere” under a new proposal set to go before the state’s parliament.

The Justice and Equity Centre in April called on the NSW government not to follow the path of Queensland, which it said “removed key safeguards” in its expanded powers.
“This expansion occurred notwithstanding a recent evaluation found no evidence wanding powers actually reduced knife carrying or crime rates and that, while wanding may increase detection, this does not translate into crime prevention,” it said in a submission.
