The Inspector of Custodial Services has raised concerns NSW prisons are breaching international laws with their use of isolation, also known as solitary confinement.
Principal Solicitor of the Justice and Equity Centre, Jonathan Hall Spence joined ABC North Coast Breakfast to discuss how prisons are using isolation on people in prison. The inspector found that more than half of people being subjected to segregation orders were Aboriginal people, and a quarter had confirmed or suspected mental conditions.
Isolation is known to cause significant harm, including mental health impacts, physical harm, and the worsening of ill health.
