The Energy: Energy rule maker weighs equity in gas ‘death spiral’

The Australian Energy Market Commission will examine one of the most vexed issues in the energy transition – how to fairly share the costs of the so-called “death spiral” of gas distribution networks being abandoned by customers electrifying their households and businesses.

The energy market rule maker has opened a consultation on two rule changes sought by Energy Consumers Australia (ECA) and the Justice and Equity Centre (JEC) that would require gas distribution networks in danger of being “stranded” to charge new customers the full cost of connecting to the network and disconnecting.
