Submission to the National Stigma and Discrimination Reduction Strategy Consultation Draft

Submission

PIAC’s Submission to the National Mental Health Commission on the Draft National Stigma and Discrimination Reduction Strategy supports the Draft Strategy’s intent and approach to reducing stigma and discrimination relating to mental health.

PIAC particularly supports the Draft Strategy’s focus on foundational actions, with recommendations that aim to strengthen protection of human rights and anti-discrimination laws. We have suggested further actions to achieve this aim.

We have drawn from our experience working with people affected by discrimination relating to mental health when accessing insurance or making an insurance claim to comment on the Draft Strategy’s actions regarding financial services and insurance. We have recommended several additional actions to strengthen oversight, accountability and enforcement of service provider obligations. These practical actions can reduce and avoid discrimination.

PIAC’s 2021 report on Mental Health Discrimination in Insurance received funding from the NMHC.
