PIAC made a submission to the Australian Energy Regulator’s (AER) issues paper on the Enhanced Wholesale Market Monitoring and Reporting Guidelines.

PIAC supported the direction of the enhancement, but noted two absences. First, the guideline does not require the AER to monitor or report factors impacting the achievements of the national gas and electricity objectives, including the objective of reducing emissions.

Second, the guidelines do not require the AER to collect information on the demand response offerings or ‘dispatches’ made by market participants.

The ability of policymakers, regulators, investors, and even consumers to make efficient, rational decisions is predicated on access to adequate data. We support the AER’s commitments to improving in this area and urge them to consider the data needs of energy stakeholders in the coming years.
