PIAC made a submission to the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water’s Household Energy Strategy Consultation Paper. The paper sought feedback on priorities and mechanisms for expanding the role of consumer energy resources, energy efficiency and residential electrification in the ongoing transition of NSW’s energy system.

We recommended that the government reframe the strategy to ensure equitable access to the benefits of consumer energy resources, rather than access to specific technologies. This crucial reframing would allow the strategy to provide stronger outcomes for NSW households and the energy transition.

Drawing upon multiple facets on our ongoing work, including efficient electrification, gas transition, metering reform and demand response, we highlighted the necessity of designing specific targets, supports and programs for different cohorts of NSW households to ensure disadvantaged households are prioritised.
