Submission to Energy Ministers’ – Emissions Reduction in the National Energy Objectives

PIAC responded to the Energy Ministers’ and Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water’s Consultation on incorporating an emissions reduction objective into the national energy objectives (NEOs). The consultation sought feedback on the proposed legislative change and associated processes.

We supported the inclusion of emissions reduction in the NEOs as a crucial step towards addressing a fundamental flaw in the energy objectives. We recommended that emissions reduction be viewed as a primary aspect of the NEOs and raised concerns with an approach that would see emissions reduction equal to or lesser than price, quality and reliability. We further recommended that the 2024 ISP process currently underway apply emissions reduction requirements in line with the changes to the NEOs.
