PIAC provided a response to the Federal Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR)’s Issues Paper on a National Battery Strategy. The Paper sought feedback on how the federal government can “create and support a sustainable, thriving end-to-end battery supply chain.”

Our submission highlighted the need to prioritise principles of sustainability, equity, energy affordability and resilience when designing the Strategy. We noted that these principles were largely missing from the Paper.

We also advocated for the Battery Strategy to be explicitly linked to the National Energy Performance Strategy (NEPS), as the Strategy is seeking a market for local batteries and the NEPS will benefit from locally made batteries to support energy performance initiatives.

Finally we provided comment and guidance on how to prioritise social and ecological outcomes in the Strategy, including local manufacturing, local content requirements, discounted domestic prices and recycling initiatives.
