Submission on the AEMC Pricing Review: Discussion Paper

The Justice and Equity Centre made a submission to the Australian Energy Market Commission’s (AEMC) Pricing Review, calling for a fairer, simpler, and more affordable energy system for all NSW consumers.

Electricity is an essential service, but pricing structures are increasingly complex and often unfair, especially for people who can’t afford solar panels or aren’t able to constantly switch providers. Our submission urges the AEMC to focus on outcomes that matter: affordable bills and fair treatment for all households, not just those who can navigate a complicated energy market.

We’re calling for a universal, low-cost energy offer that dependably meets consumers needs. We also want retailers rather than consumers to manage the risk of fluctuating network costs. And we’re pushing for stronger protections to ensure that savings derived from these reforms actually reach households, not just energy companies.

This review is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fix a broken system. NSW consumers deserve energy pricing that works for everyone – not just the most engaged or well-resourced.
