Submission on Residential Tenancies Amendment (Prohibiting No Grounds Evictions) Bill 2024

The Justice and Equity Centre has made a submission to the Legislative Assembly Select Committee on the Residential Tenancies Amendment (Rental Fairness) Bill 2023

The submission outlines our support for reforming no grounds evictions by introducing a narrow set of reasonable grounds. The ability for a landlord to evict a tenant without reason contributes to an insecure and unstable rental system, and makes renters hesitant to assert their rights. Evictions also cause significant financial and psychological stress and can put renters at risk of homelessness.

Our submission also explains that the proposed grounds should be underpinned by evidence requirements and a strong compliance and enforcement scheme. This will ensure greater protection for renters and reduce improper use of these grounds.
