The Justice and Equity Centre made a submission to the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) on its directions paper for real-time energy data. Access to real-time data from smart meters can help households better manage their energy use, reduce energy costs, and support a fairer, more efficient energy system.
Our submission highlights that the proposed 15-year rollout is too slow. NSW energy consumers—especially those facing disadvantage—deserve timely access to the benefits of real-time data. We recommend a faster transition, regulated pricing to prevent unfair charges, and stronger consumer rights over their own data.
We also call for reforms to ensure real-time data is treated as a shared public resource, not a private asset. This includes using the Consumer Data Right (CDR) to manage third-party access and ensuring all consumers—not just the most engaged—can benefit.
Real-time data is key to a cleaner, more equitable energy future. The Justice and Equity Centre will continue advocating for reforms that put people first.
