In 2022, PIAC partnered with the Housing Hub to publish a report – Housing Delayed and Denied – presenting data that showed major delays in NDIS decision-making on funding for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA).
The report also identified serious issues in the National Disability Insurance Agency’s (NDIA) decision-making and reviews, which had led to faulty decisions. These issues result in people with disability being left to wait for extended periods for access to the housing and supports they need, or having them outright denied.
This new report tracks the development of the data since the publication of first Housing Delayed and Denied, and outlines what has and has not changed in the government’s processes. While there have been some positive steps, including quicker decisions and a greater willingness by the NDIA to engage with concerns from people with disability and their advocates, significant problems still remain.
Our new report makes recommendations for government to further reduce the time participants are left waiting for decisions, prioritise the people whose circumstances are most urgent, and reform decision-making and review processes so that better decisions are made and people with disability get access to appropriate housing.
