PIAC made an oral submission to the AER’s issues paper on options to facilitate the delivery of better price information to retail energy customers. This review follows meetings held between retailers and the Prime Minister. PIAC submitted that the AER should ensure that customer price information provision be tailored to different consumer cohorts. While engaged consumers may want (and should be given) information that may be nature be more complex, those who are less engaged should be able to access fact sheets that use simple language and graphics. PIAC also noted that a single reference tariff based on an ‘average consumer’ is of little use to most electricity users and that the AER should specifically consider culturally and linguistically diverse consumers when designing price information.
