Consumer energy resources (CER) have great potential to contribute to a fairer and more efficient energy transition.

That’s why we’re advocating for some crucial reforms.

We’ve recommended changes to the regulatory framework in our response to the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water’s (DCCEEW) Data Sharing Arrangements to Inform Planning and Enable Future Markets consultation paper. These include:

  • Designing data sharing arrangements that deliver targeted benefits to the energy system and individual consumers, particularly those facing disadvantage. We urge a focus on key outcomes enabled by data, rather than simply making more data easier to access.
  • Defining common standards for devices so consumers can switch providers, orchestrators and aggregators without difficultly and make the most of their CER.
  • Reforming frameworks around data access and metering controls that promote fair competition to ensure easier and more effective access to energy data.

What’s next?

These proposed reforms aim to strengthen consumer rights, promote a more competitive market and more effective utilisation of energy data that prioritises consumer interests. [DD2] [JKR3] We’ll be engaging further on this and other rule changes relating to data sharing, while also advocating for NSW Government action to support an equitable transition as the CER market continues to evolve.
