Research Lawyer

Matilda Slater-Phillips joined Towards Truth as a Research Lawyer in January 2026.
Matilda is also completing her PhD on the murder of the non-human (with a particular focus on First Nations perspectives), while working as an Associate Lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).
Previously, Matilda worked across the Big Rivers Region in the Northern Territory as a Solicitor and Policy Officer for Katherine Women’s Information and Legal Service (KWILS), where she specialised in domestic violence, victims of crime compensation and child protection matters.
She also worked as a paralegal in commercial law at King and Wood Mallesons and Dentons, in First Nations justice at the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (NATSILS), criminal law at Level 11 Garfield Barwick Chambers, and a range of other areas from her volunteer work at Redfern Legal Centre and the Refugee Advice Casework Service (RACS).
Matilda holds a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation (Honours) from UTS.
