Makinson d’Apice and the Justice and Equity Centre (JEC) have partnered to provide this unique opportunity for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander lawyer to undertake casework, strategic litigation and law reform at the JEC.
Makinson d’Apice is one of Australia’s oldest firms which has successfully evolved and adapted to meet the challenges of being a trusted legal adviser in a modern world. The successful candidate will be employed by Makinson d’Apice and work at the JEC full time, 5 days per week, under a secondment arrangement.
The First Nations Graduate Solicitor will work with lawyers and policy officers across the JEC’s Homeless Persons’ Legal Service (HPLS) and Strategic Litigation team. You will:
- provide legal assistance, including advice and legal casework in criminal and civil law.
- contribute to policy and law reform work, including through research and drafting
- submissions, reports and articles.
- implement legal and policy advocacy strategies to address barriers to justice and fairness for marginalised communities.
We are seeking an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Lawyer with 0-3 years post qualification experience. You will also have:
- well-developed interpersonal skills.
- strong legal, technical and drafting skills.
- the ability to manage competing demands and deliver high-quality results on time.
- the ability to deliver excellent client service.
This position is open only to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is intended as a special measure for the purposes of s 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth) and s 21 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
