On Wednesday, PIAC, together with our good friends at Justice Connect, the Human Rights Law Centre and Health Justice Australia, hosted the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
The Statement, issued by the First Nations National Constitutional Convention, calls for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voice to be enshrined in the Constitution. It also calls for legislation to establish a Makarrata Commission that can supervise agreement making between governments and First Nations, and a process of truth-telling about our history. Makarrata is a Yolngu word that means coming together after a struggle.
‘It was a privilege to have the Uluru Statement from the Heart in the PIAC office and the chance to sign the canvas to show our support,’ said PIAC CEO, Jonathon Hunyor.
‘It is a profound, wise and generous vision for reconciliation. We must not miss this opportunity for our nation.’
