ABC NSW Drive: Jonathon Hunyor on failures of imprisoning children

JEC CEO Jonathon Hunyor appeared on ABC NSW Drive, explaining why the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research’s latest update should be a wake-up call to the NSW Government and shows locking up kids doesn’t work.

‘More and more money is being spent on something we know doesn’t work,’ Jonathon said.

‘234 children were in custody in June – that’s $700,000 a day. What would that look like in our regional and remote communities, where people don’t have mental health services, they don’t have youth services that are open when they need to be.’

‘We have a massive opportunity to invest in our communities, and instead, we are throwing money into the crime machine.’
