AHRC releases Villawood and Yongah Hill inspection reports

The Australian Human Rights Commission has released its latest inspection reports of the immigration detention facilities at Villawood and Yongah Hill, a large facility outside of Perth.

Key issues addressed in the reports concern treatment of immigration detainees, conditions of detention, physical and mental health and communication channels and complaints systems.

The reports include several recommendations including:

(1) revision of current policies around the use of mechanical restraints (handcuffs) especially during medical consultations and transit; and

(2) that the Department of Immigration and Border Protection should establish an independent review of health care at the Yongah Hill to assess the standard of care and propose measures to address identified deficiencies.

The full reports are available here.
