Many Australians take for granted that people can’t enter their property without permission.
But for years, NSW Police have been turning up at the homes of people on bail and demanding they present themselves at the door, even in the middle of the night.
Police watchdog, the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) has released a damning new report into how police conduct bail compliance checks in NSW, visiting homes to make sure people on bail are adhering to the terms of their bail, without court authority.
The LECC have said this practice should stop, and they should seek court approval for every bail check where they want to enter a property.
The Justice and Equity Centre (JEC) have argued for years that the way police are conducting bail checks is unlawful. Grace Gooley, Senior Solicitor for the JEC joined 2SER Breakfast to discuss.
