Assistance animals are vital for the independence and safety of many people with disability.
However, people who use assistance animals report challenges using public places and services, including being refused access.
Part of the problem is that there are no national rules accrediting and recognising assistance animals. But the Australian Government is now developing national principles that can change that.
Disability rights organisations and their allies say these principles could make life easier for people who use assistance animals but are concerned about the Government’s plans for design and implementation.
The Justice and Equity Centre (JEC) has signed a joint statement calling on governments to ensure people with disability have access to assistance animals for safety and independence. The statement calls for the establishment of a National Assistance Animal Framework. The DSS is accepting submissions to their consultation until 1 June 2025.
