Oliver Williams, Justice and Equity Centre Aboriginal Social Justice Graduate, wins Ngalaya award

Oliver Williams, a Wiradjuri man and Bachelor of Laws student, won First Nations Senior Law Student of the Year at last week’s 2024 Ngalaya Ball.

Oliver joined the Justice and Equity Centre (JEC) as a Research Assistant on our Toward Truth project in early 2023. As his studies continued, he took on a new role in our Aboriginal Social Justice Graduate scheme, through which he is now seconded to The Shopfront Youth Legal Centre.

‘To be recognised by First Nations lawyers from a similar background reaffirms my aspirations, particularly my goals of contributing to the justice system and promoting a fair environment for our community,’ Oliver said.

Even early in his career, Oliver has seen how legal practice can make meaningful change for people. These experiences have only deepened his commitment to First Nations justice.

‘Attending Court has shaped my passions and I’ve angled my career towards assisting my people and community,’ he said.

‘Prior to this, my experience with Towards Truth really changed my perspective, and helped me develop critical thinking about how the justice system impacts Aboriginal people.’

This impact is not always negative, as Oliver explains: ‘Many things are changing. The development of Aboriginal laws and customs within Court is a pertinent example of this.’

This is only the start for Oliver, who is looking forward to his admission and practice as a criminal lawyer at The Shopfront, before returning to the JEC to work on strategic litigation for systemic change.
