PIAC case study – NDIS funding for a psychiatric assistance animal
In 2022, PIAC supported a client who was appealing an NDIA decision to refuse funding for a psychiatric assistance animal. The client’s story has been covered by the ABC.
PIAC is sharing a case study about the client’s experience and an information sheet about the NDIA Assistance Animal Guideline to assist others who would like to appeal a similar decision in relation to NDIS funding for an assistance animal.

PIAC is not taking on any more individual matters relating to psychiatric assistance animals. However we will continue to engage with the NDIA and others to seek to change the unfair, arbitrary guidelines for funding psychiatric assistance animals.
If you would like legal advice about your own matter at the AAT, you should seek legal advice from one of the organisations that offer individual case management. Information about those organisation is available on the Department of Social Services website.
