Submission to the Use of genetic testing results in life insurance underwriting – Treasury Consultation

PIAC made a submission to the Treasury Consultation Paper on the use of genetic testing results in life insurance underwriting. Drawing on our work on discrimination in insurance on the basis of mental health, we highlight concerns about insurer compliance with discrimination laws and the need for regulation to protect consumers. PIAC also endorses the submission of Intersex Human Rights Australia outlining the impact of genetic testing discrimination on intersex people.

PIAC endorses recommendations by researchers in the A-GLIMMER report, including that a total ban on the use of genetic test results in insurance underwriting be implemented.

PIAC also recommends legislating a positive duty to eliminate discrimination, and strengthening regulatory oversight of insurance industry compliance.
