PIAC welcomes new Chair and Director

PIAC is pleased to announce Sera Mirzabegian SC as the new Chair of the PIAC Board following our annual general meeting on 16 November 2023.

Sera is a senior barrister practicing in commercial litigation, regulatory investigations, class actions and human rights. Sera has acted for the Australian Human Rights Commission and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, alongside other human rights and environment organisations.

Sera joined the PIAC board in November 2022 and brings significant governance experience. She has been a Councillor of the NSW Bar Association and is currently serving as the Co-Chair of the NSW Bar’s Diversity and Equality Committee.

We are also pleased to welcome Brooke Massender to the PIAC Board. Brooke is the Global Head of Pro Bono for Herbert Smith Freehills, where she leads the direction of pro bono services across a network of 26 offices.

Brooke is an experienced solicitor with expertise in access to justice and working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients. She provides strategic and legal advice for several non-profits, including as a board member of Justice Connect and the Pro Bono Leadership Council.

At the AGM we farewelled Rebecca Gilsenan and Eileen Baldry AO, who left the PIAC Board following many years of dedicated service. Rebecca joined the board in 2012 and became Chair in 2018, while Eileen joined in 2015 and became Deputy Chair in 2019. We recently shared reflections from Rebecca and Eileen about their time on the PIAC Board on LinkedIn.

We thank Rebecca and Eileen for their generosity and commitment to PIAC’s work.
