AEMO Draft Inputs, Assumptions and Scenarios Report 2021

Publication date:

Resource type:
Submission

PIAC responded to the Australian Energy Market Operator’s (AEMO) consultation into its draft Inputs, Assumptions and Scenarios Report (IASR). The IASR is a key input into the 2022 Integrated System Plan (ISP) and AEMO’s other forecasting and planning work. PIAC’s submission was supported by the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS), Uniting Communities, and Energetic Communities.

The submission makes recommendations concerning AEMO’s treatment of emissions trajectories and climate change impacts across scenarios, it urges AEMO to drop one of its scenarios, which assumes low gas prices and widespread Carbon Capture and Storage and is inconsistent with its own principles and criteria for including scenerios. The submission suggests alternative scenarios and sensitivites, in particular, it recommends AEMO model a scenario of zero-emissions by 2035, as the most recent evidence suggests this is needed to limit temperature rises to 1.5 degrees.
