Industry group wants climate policy on agenda in wake of bushfires

Energy companies will meet Energy Minister Angus Taylor on Thursday to discuss the bushfire response but one peak business lobby says they must also address climate change.

Mr Taylor said the roundtable meeting would discuss how to help people who lost power supply, and how to target recovery efforts where infrastructure was damaged.

Public Interest Advocacy Centre energy policy lead Craig Memery said policies needed to be updated to include new measures to make the energy grid more resilient, and to help customers impacted by climate-related events.

“The roundtable is a good opportunity to discuss how resilience can be achieved without blowing out costs for consumers,” Mr Memery said.

“Any discussion about energy resilience at the roundtable should keep in mind that energy is an essential service, people should be able to access it sustainably and at least cost, and any costs of creating a more resilient energy system should be shared fairly.”
