Submission to the Parliamentary Inquiry into Constitutional Recognition Relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

Submission to the Joint Select Committee on Constitutional Recognition Relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

PIAC’s submission expresses our support for the Uluru Statement from the Heart as the foundation of constitutional recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This includes support for all three elements of that statement:

  1. Voice: a First Nations Voice to Parliament enshrined in the Constitution.
  2. Treaty: a process for agreement making.
  3. Truth: truth-telling about our history.

In doing so, we recognise the unprecedented and extensive process of consultation led by and engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia that culminated in the historic Uluru Statement.

PIAC calls on Commonwealth Parliament to work towards implementation of the symbolic and practical measures contained in the Uluru Statement from the Heart as laying the foundations for unity and reconciliation.
