Response to the Uluru Statement from the Heart

The Public Interest Advocacy Centre is pleased to support the Uluru Statement from the Heart, issued by the First Nations National Constitutional Convention.

The Statement calls for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voice to be enshrined in the Constitution. It also calls for legislation to establish a Makarrata Commission that can supervise agreement making between governments and First Nations, and a process of truth-telling about our history. Makarrata is a Yolngu word that means coming together after a struggle.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have shown unity, strength, generosity and wisdom in proposing this basis for substantive structural change and Constitutional reform.

The Uluru Statement from the Heart concludes with an invitation to walk together ‘in a movement of the Australian people for a better future’. PIAC is proud to take that walk with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, on a path to recognition based on truth and justice.
