ABC News: Indigenous family takes NSW Police to Human Rights Commission, claiming racial discrimination

An Aboriginal family is taking NSW Police to the Australian Human Rights Commission over claims of racial discrimination against two boys.

The boys’ mother says her sons were the target of excessive bail checks by police because they are Indigenous.

The Justice and Equity Centre said it decided to take the case to the commission due to the “sheer number and excessive nature of police attendance at this family’s home”.

The two brothers, from regional NSW, were subjected to more than 150 police checks at their family home in less than two years while they were on bail for minor offences between 2021 and 2023.

The boys were 11 and 13 years old at the time, and had no significant criminal history.
